Himalayan Viagra - Nepal Documentary

It's the world's most rare and expensive herb -- a mysterious aphrodisiac which only grows on the head of caterpillars in Himalayas. But trade in yarchagumba is funding the Maoist uprising. The best Yarchagumba comes from Dolpa - the poorest region of Nepal, where there are no roads, few jobs - an area dependent on aid. At harvest time, entire villages empty as inhabitants go in search of the herb. "Everybody wants to collect yarchagumba to earn money." But Maoists have taken over the trade and impose their own tax, staving the government of it's income. "We make a lot of money from the yarchagumba tax. It's the main source of income for our party", states Maoist spokesman Comrade Deepak.

Kumari - Living Goddess - Nepal Documentary

The Kumari Devi is believed to be the bodily incarnation of the goddess Taleju, and she is selected and installed at a very young age until the time she menstruates, after which it is believed that the goddess vacates her body. The process of selecting a successor is then started again. Serious illness or a major loss of blood from an injury are also causes for her to revert to common status.

The selection of the Living Goddess is very complex. The preliminary test is merely concerned with the "32 attributes of perfection", which includes an appropriate horoscope, the colour of her eyes, the shape of her teeth and the sound of her voice.

The poor girls from the Sakya community, aged between 4 to 7 years of age, are made to confront a goddess in the dark room. The sight of Buffalo heads, demon-like masked dancers, and the sounds of terrifying noises scare some of these innocent children. The real goddess would not be frightened, so the girl who remains calm throughout the tests is the only one who is entitled to sit on the pedestal for worship as the Living Goddess.

After she retires, a former Royal Kumari receives a single gold coin and a piece of red fabric from her clothes worn during her time as Goddess. She also receives a state pension of $80 per month, about twice the average salary. Superstions of marrying an ex-Kumari include that of the husband dying within six months of marriage. Most, however, get married and have families, with the husband surviving all the superstitions.

Gurkhas on Documentary

Gorkhas are indigenous people mainly from mid-western and eastern Nepal. They are Well known for their history and their role in the unification of modern day Nepal (Gorkha Paltoon, modern day Nepalese Army), the Brigade of Gurkhas (British Army), Gurkha Rifles (Indian Army). Gurkha units are closely associated with the khukuri, a forward-curving Nepalese knife of formidable fighting power. Former Chief of staff of the British Indian Army, Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw, once famously said[2] about Gurkhas: "If a man says he is not afraid of dying, he is either lying or is a Gurkha."

Documentary On Royal Massacre of Nepal

The Nepalese royal massacre occurred on Friday, June 1, 2001, at a house in the grounds of the Narayanhity Royal Palace, then the residence of the Nepalese monarchy, when the heir to the throne, Prince Dipendra killed nine members of his family and himself. The dead included King Birendra of Nepal and Queen Aiswarya, Dipendra's father and mother. Prince Dipendra became de jure King of Nepal upon his father's death and died whilst in a coma three days after the act; however there are claims that Dipendra was already dead before being declared as the King. Gyanendra then became king.

There have been lots of controversies and theories behind this massacre. I am not advocating anything. Its entirely up to you how you want to perceive this video. May God bless our Late Royal Family. May their Soul Rest In Peace.

Nepal Gay Cinema

Brokeback Everest: Nepal's Film Industry Embraces Gay Romance

If Hollywood has Brokeback Mountain and Bollywood created a buzz with Fire -- a controversial lesbian love story -- in Nepal, Snow Flowers is poised to become the first Nepali commercial movie to portray a same-sex love story.

Lets not get over exited or judgmental about this movie now. Lets wait and see how this movie will bring revolution to the conservative society and audience of Nepal. Personally, I am eagerly waiting for this movie.

I was a big fan of broke back mountain, but I have to admit I enjoyed and watching the Indian movie Fire. Sometimes Bollywood tend to capture more depth in few scenes than Hollywood. You might think otherwise.

Back to Nepali Gay upcoming Movie, it is set to release next spring, the film stars two of Nepal's leading actresses, Dia Maskey and Nisha Adhikari, and is directed by Subarna Thapa, who also wrote the screenplay beginning two years ago.

"This concept is not new, but what's new is that Nepali-ness is reflected in this movie, the obstacles and challenges," says the France-based director, whose first short film Maalami (Funeral) has been acclaimed in France and Italy.

"The subject is also untouched in Nepali cinema," he explains, "which seduced me. I had always thought it would be a story of two women, and it hasn't changed."

In the background of this production, the LGBTI rights movement in Nepal continues to thrive. Emboldened by a 2007 Supreme Court decision that declared full, fundamental equality for LGBTI people, activists in the country are now fighting for proper implementation of those laws.

The Maggie Doyne Story-Documentary

Maggie Doyne created The BlinkNow Foundation, as a vehicle to share her ideas with other young people, especially children in the U.S. She believes that in the blink of an eye, we can all make a difference.

BlinkNow is a grass-roots organization working to empower young people to become pioneers in developing their own solutions to world poverty. The organization targets under-developed, war-torn countries where extreme poverty exists. These nations have high rates of illiteracy, disease, child labor, and unstable governments, thus making them the prime focus for our organization. The organization has established its initial project in Nepal, Kopila Valley Children’s Home.

Children of God - Nepali Documentary

This documentary is about a group of siblings who eke out their existence from the offerings and other goods found in the sacred Bagmati River.

"Children of God” explores the life of the children who live beside the Baghmati River in Nepal - on the sacred grounds of a Hindu temple in Katmandu – an area forgotten and ignored by the world, but considered the holiest and most sacred to the Nepalese people. The children are undeterred by the daily cries and wailing from the daily funeral ceremonies; instead they rob the corpses for food and dive into the river to grab coins used as funeral offerings by the mourners. Some risk their lives by begging while others fall prey to drugs and disease. The film exposes the social conditions of the suppressed Nepalese people through the plight of their children, where reverence for the old and dead far outweighs the care for the young and living. Experiencing their innocence and their hardship through songs, stories and heartbreaking living conditions, exposes the contradiction of the material world that rests upon perhaps the most spiritual culture on earth. Children of God will remind you of scenes from “Slumdog Millionaire” and is reminiscent of Charcoal People released by Vanguard Cinema.
