Ayurveda Interviews

Ayurveda is an independent rock-based band with a progressive style that is ambient, heavy, and alternative with electronic and Nepalese influences. They are based out of Ithaca, NY when not on tour. The five member band is: Tom Burchinal (vocals and keys), Diwas Gurung (guitar and vocals), Shikhar R. Bajracharya (guitar), Dan Halperin (bass and laptop), and Mike Parker (drums).

THE SHADOWS (Hard Rock Band)

Think Chitwan and it's the call of the wild: forests filled with rhinos, tigers and elephants. Rock music does not spring to mind, and certainly not original sounds from a Chitwan-based band. That's where The Shadows step in. This five-man band delivers music that's hard as a rock with high-voltage stage performances. "Wherever we play people ask with surprise, 'Oh, you're a rock band from Chitwan?'" says Amit. "We are from Narayangadh, Chitwan and I think that's something special."

And special they are, although their genesis follows the route of many bands before: nine years ago, a group of school friends formed a band to play in small local concerts. What differentiated The Shadows from other wannabes was a drive to be unique. So, they always gave every performance the best they could, honed their skills and bonded as a band. Finally, after six years, they recorded "Suna Hamro Awaaz", their first album after they started jamming as a band. Unfortunately, their then vocalist quit the band and Swapnil stepped in.

"Suna Hamro Awaaz" was released through Moonlight Records and it did "pretty well," assesses Amit. "It's pretty obvious that we can't make as much money as the 'folkers' and 'poppers' but we are satisfied. The company sold about 13,500 cassette copies of our album and it's still in demand." The CD version found takers as far away as Japan, Britain and the United States, which in itself was quite remarkable for a rock band in Nepal.

You ain't seen nothing yet if you miss The Shadows on stage. They come off as a seasoned act and have toured Pokhara, Bhairahawa and Biratnagar. At home they are hailed as rock gods. "The support from our hometown is almost 100 percent and we were appreciated for our music, lyrics, and especially for our stage performance wherever we play. Nepali rock fans are amazing!" says Amit.

While "Suna Hamro Awaaz" was basically a slow rock record, their new album "Hidne Manchhe Ladchha" has a heavier feel with new riffs reveals the band. Reality is from where The Shadows mine their lyrics. "We want to keep people out of fantasy worlds," explains Amit. "We focus on real life struggles and stories." Tracks like "Hidne Maanche Ladcha", "Ma", "Prakriti", "Dharma" and "Bhatkeko Kotha" from their second album are perfect examples.

The Shadows will be releasing their sophomore effort "Hidne Manchhe Ladchha" this month through Samjhana Audio Video (SAV) and is supported by Sachin Singh. They are also working on a video for the title track. With their second album almost out, they are already planning on working on a third. It'll include new versions of songs from the first and second album along with new tracks.

Watch out for The Shadows—they're definitely not fading into the dark.

The Shadows are:

Swapnil Sharma: vocals
Prashant VK: rhythm guitar
Prakash Rasailey: lead guitar
Amit Pradhan: bass
Bikash Manandhar: drums

Nepali Maya Bazin In American Adult Industry

Video featuring Maya Bazin was around in internet and some forum like xnepali forum (the video is posted in the link – but, new registration is closed these days.) for some time. I considered it off topic as the video is not suitable for general public.

I am posting this article simply because Kantipur published it in Saptahik.

A few weeks back, the interview of Smita Thapa that was ‘A-rated’ and was not suitable for the kids to read. Question was raised weather the interview was in fact an advertisement of a call girl. With this recent article, it is clear, Kantipur is advertising the prostitutes and their movies.

I have a few question for Kantipur:

What would a high school student do after reading this article? (Don’t say they don’t read Saptahik.)
What would an adult do?
Is Kantipur publication distributing the movie in question in Nepal?
If you ask me, I would certainely search for her in the internet if I have internet access. If not, I will go in the video parlors to find if they have a movie Saptahik is talking about. I might even call Kantipur publication to ask where I can find the movie. Media houses sure are good in advertising!

Now, it is an open truth that Kantipur is more focused on sex and related stuffs. The reputation and weightage of the media organization as the top media house is under threat and it wants to capitalize by exploiting the reader’s hunger for sex.

A Clash between New and Old Generations

For the last two decades, Nepali film industry has been ruled by Rajesh Hamal and his craze hasn’t diminished to date. The new comer actors had tried to follow his path, but none have succeeded. Hamal represents masala types of movies with common ingredients like action, comedy, songs, and glamorous actresses. After the release of "Sano Sansar" and "Kagbeni", Nepali movies had stepped in new direction creating a sharp contrast between the two groups of film makers. In 2008, a music video director, Alok Nembang, made "Sano Sansar" and another young director, Bhusan Dahal, released "Kagbeni". Both of these movies introduced new crew members and both were not targeted to the so-called regular Nepali movie viewers but, the young generation. And those not-so-regular Nepali movie viewers liked them very much.

Although both of the movies were extremely popular and liked by many, they could not do a good business. It was clear that there is another group of movie lovers who would love movies not made on masala movies. After that, new faces and directors have started making Nepali movies every year. And contrast is evident in

Nepali movie industry with one group of film makers making movies targeted to "Regular Nepali movie viewers" and the other group making movie targeted to youngsters and city dwellers. For the last few years, we have witnessed the "Regular type of movies" win the box-office game, earning more than non-masala movies.
Now, it seems, the situation has changed. It seems, the days of actors like Rajesh Hamal and Nikhil Upreti are over as they have produced more flops than hits. Last year’s movies like "First Love" and "Bato Muni ko Phul" had received good reviews and they had also earned a decent revenue; creating hope for new film makers.

The success of "Loot", this year, has made the new movie makers even more excited. The movie "Miss U" is produced and acted by Dilip Rayamajhi also features popular Nepali actress Namrata Shrestha and Barun Rana represents the new generation of movies. If this movie, directed by Suresh Darpan Pokharel, becomes a success, it would be clear that the new generation is winning the Nepali movie industry. It is to be seen if "Miss U" will prove that the new generation are capabale of running the show in Nepali movie industry or if there is still hope for the movies like "Majboor" or "Mayako Barima".
